Search for a subscription tracker and most of the results ask for the same thing first: connect your bank. It is convenient. It is also a bigger decision than the sign-up screen makes it look.
What “connect your bank” means
The app — or more often a third-party data aggregator working for it — receives ongoing access to your transaction history. Every purchase, not just subscriptions. That data is stored on servers you do not control, under a privacy policy you almost certainly did not read, and often it is what funds the free version of the app.
The accuracy problem nobody mentions
Bank-connected trackers guess. They look for repeating charges and label them. They miss annual plans that have only charged once, misfile a monthly transfer as a subscription, and cannot see a free trial that has not charged yet — which is precisely the one you needed warning about.
The manual alternative
A manual tracker asks you to type each subscription in once: name, price, billing cycle, renewal date. That is a few minutes of work, and in exchange:
- Nothing leaves your device unless you choose to sync it through your own iCloud account.
- Trials are tracked before they charge, because you added them the day you started them.
- The list is complete and correct, because you made it.
Subvanta is built this way on purpose. There is no account and no server; the App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected. Its only network requests are a public exchange-rate table, so mixed currencies still give one total, and — only if you switch it on — a service’s icon fetched from that service’s own website.
Who should still use a bank-connected app
If you want a full budgeting tool that categorises every transaction, a bank connection is the honest way to do that, and the privacy trade may be worth it to you. For the narrower job of knowing what your subscriptions cost and when they renew, it is not required.
Want this number kept up to date on your phone? Subvanta tracks your subscriptions with a reminder before every renewal and before each free trial starts charging. No account, no bank login — the App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected”. Free for five subscriptions.
