How to stop free trials from charging you

Free trials convert on a schedule you are meant to forget. Four habits that make sure the first charge is a decision, not a surprise.

A free trial is a subscription with the first payment postponed. The business model depends on a fraction of people forgetting the date. Here is how not to be that fraction.

1. Write down the end date the day you start

Not “about two weeks” — the date. Trial lengths vary (7, 14, 30 days, sometimes “until the end of the month”), and the confirmation email is the only place it is stated plainly. Put it in a tracker or a calendar before you close the email.

2. Set the reminder two days before, not on the day

Charges often land at the start of the day, in a time zone that is not yours. A reminder on the day itself can arrive after the money has gone. Two days gives you time to decide and to cancel through whichever route the service uses.

3. Know which cancellation route applies

Trials started inside an iPhone app are managed by Apple (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) and stay active until the end date even after you cancel — so cancel early. Trials started on a website are cancelled on that website, and some end access immediately; check before you cancel if you still want the remaining days.

4. Decide on purpose

When the reminder arrives, ask one question: would I sign up for this today at this price? If the answer is not a clear yes, cancel. Keeping a subscription should be an active choice, and the trial end date is the cheapest moment to make it.

A tracker that shows trials counting down alongside your other subscriptions — with the yearly cost the trial will turn into — makes that question easier to answer honestly.
